Screech at startup and silent thereafter can also be crank pulley (harmonic balancer) delaminating/slipping.

Hope not, but not uncommon on the XJ40.

actually my wife only screeched when I tried kickdown once...

how can I check if it is the crank pulley (harmonic balancer) delaminating/slipping?

Mark the whole pulley from the bolt to the outside in one single line, start the car, stop it, see if the line still there, as it was, if it is, its fine.

You need to try more often. She will get used to it eventually, or you will go deaf.
