Boot Lid Tactile Panel

Postby Equinoxstudios » Mon Apr 26, 2010 12:39 pm

Imaginitive name for this part! I'm after the panel that fits above the rear number plate. I reckon it's called the 'tactile panel' because when you lift the boot/trunk it's the bit your fingers actually touch. It has apertures in it for the two number plate lights and the boot release catch.

Closest thing I can find is the 'bright finished' version item 1 in the following picture, part no. HMB6141AA but the one I'm after has no bright finisher and my one is held on by three screws (or it would be if the hole for one of them was not the size of a 5p piece!).

Any idea on the part number of this without the bright finisher but EVEN BETTER would be if someone was to say they had a serviceable one they could send me ;)

Well I scissored up a wee bit of tinplate, got out the P40, the P38 and two rattle cans and she looks like new.

Always fun when you can unscrew an item from the car easily and bring it indoors.

Held on by three screws, it was only the metal around the centre screw that had dissolved. Nice little job.

I might just leave that centre screw out...

They must have made these out of the cheapest rustiest steel they could find. My car got a brand new one from Jaguar in 2004 and it is rusty again, which is poor really since the car has been garaged all that time and done about 15,000 miles...

The trouble with this bit of trim is the rain runs down the boot lid and by capillary action gets drawn into the tiny gap all along the lid .
I took mine off one day long after washing the car and it was still soaking wet behind it , i bought a new one about three years ago and painted Dinitrol on the back and the unseen bit of boot lid before fitting it .

The whole of the back end of these cars is a water trap , just got to get some wax in all the right places ;)

don't suppose anyone still has one of these panels? the chrome strip is still in good nick but not sure that it will separate from the panel as mine is off, very, very rusted. however, if you didnt know it had been there you would really miss it!
bootlid seemed solid, just a few surface rust marks will try t-cutting those out.... but the panel really does make a mess!

Is it very childish that every time I read about the Jag having a 'tactile panel' on it's rear.... I giggle?

Oooooh, I've got a tactile panel. Would you like to touch it?

Or...

Does my tactile panel look big in this?
