Ah, OK.

Just a little more info for you then. If it’s just for protection you wouldn’t bother with a top coat.

As I have access to the processes I always go for a top coat, usually because I want a different gloss level to basic ecoat.

Industry standard testing is a salt spray test.

Ecoat can give 1000hr resistance (std JLR/Ford/Honda underbody requirement)

Basic Powder Coating gives about 150 hours to 250 hours.

A Zinc powder base coat and standard top coat can get you up to about 1000 hours.

Ecoat plus standard powder top coat is 1500hrs. So it’s well worth adding in if your doing a job anyway (Ecoat is only 20 microns thick so it doesn’t interfere with thread fitment either).

Thanks guys,

Just short of 500 miles in 3 years! 150 of those in the last week!

It was new MOT tester today, completely new garage to me as my friendly mechanic has disappeared, worryingly. I hope he is OK…

The new tester is a big Jag fan and has had all of them (in his words), he particularly likes XJs and runs a wedding fleet that’s always got at least one XJ in it. His favourite XJ being the series 1 and 2 cars.

He commented that his only XJ40 was an early one, 100% reliable and 100% rust! He loved it but vowed never an XJ40 again. He was impressed with mine and said it was better underneath than his 11 reg XF!

I think I’ll keep in touch with him as he’s very knowledgeable on these motors and didn’t seem afraid of taking on the mechanical work should it arise.

So in the end, the MOT took an hour and I was in there another hour chatting jags with him and having a look at his 1950’s Rolls Royce that was being serviced
