New engine not starting

Postby XJeej » Wed Feb 17, 2021 9:05 pm

Hello all I'm a new member to this forum.

I have a very nice XJ40 which had a bad engine in it. I got a free X300 AJ16 4.0 engine which I built in. I am using the stock 3.6 ECU and manifold. Both spark and fuel is happening but the engine will barely start. I'm using the XJ40's crankshaft sensor on the X300 crankshaft damper + trigger wheel, and I got unknown gas in the tank which the old engine ran fine on, but the new engine has higher CR. Is there anyone with experience on this swap who can advice me?

Well I am not an expert but, appreciate the job who have done fitting it all and the fact you have spark and fuel but surely you would have been better with the X300 ECU to make sure the fuel and spark arrived at the right time. Also how did you power up the coil packs ?? Also the X300 would have an electronic gearbox linked to the ECU ?? I bet the wiring was a nightmare lol.

It's been fairly straight forward because I have a manual gearbox and I also placed over the distributor from the XJ40.

WOW so no gearbox ECU issues and no coil packs, sorted !! Cant help thinking you are almost there, :D Whilst you say you have fuel are the injectors actually firing fuel ??

Just thinking out loud and trying to get a complete picture of your FrankenEngine setup: are you using the 3.6 AJ6 or the 4.0 AJ16 injectors/fuel pressure regulator?

Does the engine start better when you use starter spray/brake cleaner?
Could help focusing on either spark or fuel... ;)

Brake cleaner does not help it!

Am using AJ6 3.6 fuel regulator+injectors.

I suspect the crankshaft trigger wheel being different or the higher CR causing problems with the old fuel.

Yes. Engine will fire during starting, and eventually it can run but very poorly and will stall after a few seconds. Turning the distributor does seem to influence things a bit.

Suggests ignition rather than fuel then being the key issue...

Thinking out loud again: would the single AJ6 ignition coil be too weak versus the six AJ16 coil packs?

And you might be on to something with the CPS trigger signal you alluded to... :?:

I just dug deeper and found that the later 3.2/4.0 AJ6 as well as the AJ16 engines use one injector for both engine sizes (AJ6: EBC4430, AJ16: LHE1520AA), suggesting injector capacity should not be a major issue either.

So yes this was the problem. The AJ16 trigger wheel has one notch out, the AJ6 has 3 notches. Which means the engine ran on two cilinders before.

Made a tool and switched the pullies, it started right up and ran smooth :D :D :D Very happy with my free engine.
