Crank position sensor same for early and later years?

Postby fremaes » Fri Oct 16, 2020 2:40 pm

hi everyone,

I'm new to this forum, living in Belgium
I'm on the verge of buying a 87 Xj40 3.6. The car has a low mileage but has had a standstill for 15 years, ran last year but now nothing (seller's information)
I suspect the CPS since the rev counter doesn't move just vibrates a little and a testlight over the coil is'nt flashing.

I just have a question (first of probably many to come if I continue with this buy)
are the CPS of the early models and the later models interchangeable (apart form the connector of course).
The reason for the question is easy I only want to buy this car if I can make it run. And a early CPS cost a (ridiculous) 200 Euro an aftermarket later one only 40 (still a lot for something so simple but its a Jaaaaaaag ;) )

anyone with some experience?

Correct, they are all the same, just different connector, think yours will be big round yellow plug, later cars will have smallish square connector.

I've changed the car side connector on mine to the later square-triangle ish connector so that I can use the cheaper sensors, works perfectly.
