More added to the original parts pile: I swapped the boat-sized steering wheel for one from Naki Towers: an OEM Momo wheel in the same colour as the car upholstery, Isis Blue. Turned out to be a straightforward job, thanks to the lack of airbags!
Two phillips screws on the back of the wheel let you remove the front pad, after which you can remove the horn contact tube with a 24mm socket and then remove the steering wheel locknut, another 24mm job. The old wheel came off easily, so I could fit the Momo boss, refit the locknut and washer and bolt the steering wheel to the boss with 6 x 10mm hex bolts, provided with the boss. The Momo wheel features two horn buttons (not dissimilar to the original setup, btw); attaching the switch wires to earth (one of the boss hex bolts) and switched (a self-tapper into the central horn contact tube) was easy. Pushing the leather center pad on finished the job.
The original wheel's size reminded me too much of a taxi, the Momo looks - in my unhumble opinion - both sportier and more elegant than the part it has replaced...
These two pictures illustrate the difference in diameter well:
