Window Rattle

Postby Aidan » Mon Jun 25, 2018 6:25 pm

Another day, another problem... yawn!

Over the past few days, the rattle that seems to come from the rear windows has suddenly worsened. It's been there for months but it only happens when the windows are wound down, and the further down they are, the worse the noise becomes. Now it even rattles when going over bumps in the road - of which we have many! - and also when I close the driver's door I can hear something in the rear driver's side door rattling when the window is down.
The noise doesn't happen with the window up, but it is getting worse in the passenger's side rear door as well.

Has anyone else experienced these symptoms, and do you perhaps have a cure?

Well, I removed the right rear door card and weather proofing and stuck my hand up behind the inner metal door skin. By fiddling around and grabbing things whilst banging on the window to simulate closing the door, I found that it appears to be loosness in the window regulator.
The arms that run with little wheels in a horizontal channel appear to rattle around when the window is down. Seems there is general loosness in the regulator assembly :( . I'd really rather not replace the regulators, so has anyone managed to service/ tighten/ improve the regulator?

I am emailing you some pics of a regular off the car.
But there are a few possibilities,
1- the 4 Torx bolts that hold it to the inner door have worked loose.
2- the three Torx bolts holding the motor to the regulator are loose.
3- two swivelling joins in mechanism good be worn/ damaged. No adjustment possible, as they are machine crimped on.
4- 3x plastic wheels for runners. Any of them could be damaged. No adjustment possible (without modifications).

Try do up any accessible nut and see if that helps?
If not, then it will likely need to come out?

Thanks Naki, I only saw this post this morning. I'll have another poke around inside the door when I get a chance but from whay you say and the photos you sent me (and thanks for those, too) I'll most likely have to replace it. When I was fiddling inside the door yesterday it felt like it was most likely numbers 3 and 4 of your list. Typical that it's the ones with no adjustment or repair possible (without mods)!

I seem to recall some talk or threads somewhere years ago - apparently not on this forum as my searches have yielded nothing - about a plastic clip or channel or something on the rear windows of 40s which holds the window steady when it's lowered, and that these can break if the door is closed too hard with the window lowered which renders the window useless and usually stuck open!
I thought that it might be that part wearing on my 300 - if it's the same design? - and letting the window rattle prior to catastrophic failure. Do you have any idea what that part may be?

Thanks again for the advice and pictures.

These windows are usually fairly reliably.
I haven’t heard of this issue really. Though I don’t doubt something could go wrong.
There’s a channel fixed to the bottom of the glass. I guess it’s possible that could come away?
You may want to check that before deciding to get a new regulator. As it may be a replacement window glass you will need? If you lower the window, you should be able to feel with your hand if that horizontal channel has come away from the glass.

The regulator design is identical on X300 as 40, though the motors are a revised version and of course a different plug too.
X300 doors have an integral window frame though, unlike the 40 frame that can be lifted out.

Thanks Naki.
Going to start lowering my XC90's front subframe today so I may only get back to the X300's window problems later.
