Apparently I don't fit in an X300 :(

Drove seven hours yesterday to buy a DD6 x300 and when i got there i couldn't get the seat into a position that didn't leave my head touching the roof. I'm only 6'3" which isn't THAT tall, and have no probs in my XJ40. Is the headroom worse, or was the seat not going all the way down I wonder!? It was going up and down but even at the bottom it wasn't enough. Had it reclined to the point it was almost touching the back seats before there was any clearance at all. Would surprise me if they are notably worse than 40s in that department?!

I'm also ~6'3" and had both sunroof and without sunroof x300s. The x300 with sunroof is definitely smaller and with the seat down completely you'll be touching the headlining unless the seat is reclined. The x300 without the sunroof is a completely different beast, you'd only touch the headlining with the seat high up. If its different then there was probably something wrong with the seat not going fully down, but should be easy to notice it?

This one yesterday had a sunroof, and that definitely seemed to be part of the issue. My existing Daimler XJ40 does also have a sunroof too, and there isn't much headroom certainly, but it's not impossible to find a sensible driving position that doesn't involve lying down! Hmmm, wikipedia lists the overall height of the X300 as almost three inches shorter than the XJ40 so maybe some of that is indeed in the cabin :(

I thought sunroof would be an issue. I suspect the DD6 you looked, also had the nicer and bigger Daimler seats, the sports 3.2l manual seats I had in my old x300 were sitting lower than my current higher spec electric ones so I had enough of headroom there with the seats fully down.

Its even worse at the back seat, in the sunroof model there is special space in the roof just for tall people :)

Time to look for one without sunroof then, plenty of headroom in it, even with the seats up.

Yeah, it's not like I'd get much use out of a sunroof here in Scotland anyway :D

It's the sun roof clearly. That can make all the difference.
Sun roofs are way more trouble than they are worth.
I think sun roofs were standard spec on Daimlers, so it's somewhat unavoidable if you want a top spec model.

Yeah, I was pretty sure they were standard on a 40 but wasn't sure about 300s. I'm determined to own a 12cylinder car with picnic tables at some point but they keep eluding me for some reason!

If you really must have picnic tables, then I guess you could try and find an XJ12 without a sun roof, and swap the seats out? But of course that could create its own challenges?
My own 93 XJ12 is sun roof less, so they do exist.

i've bid on a couple of jag-badged XJ81s on eBay recently with that possibility in mind, but both times i was the high bidder but didn't meet the reserve, and if a second person doesn't bid high enough, then your own bid will only go up to just above whatever they bid, which is a frustrating aspect of eBay reserve auctions. so even if you would have paid whatever the seller wanted, you don't get the opportunity. (and i'm not quite motivated enough to message the seller or whatever).

but yeah, good shout, the seat-swap idea is presumably possible with an 81 OR a 300. or i could get the top three inches of my head removed to solve the height issue, i don't think there's anything important in there

Presumably you bid on this one then?
You can bid again until you reach the reserve price, regardless of any other bidders/ lack of bidders. If it was a car you wanted to own.

I know the owner. He's a decent guy, and real Jaguar enthusiast. I would suggest it is worth while speaking to him directly, and not relying on any auction gods?
