Yes indeed. At £30, it’s tempting, with little risk.
I have a press, so getting it in/ out won’t be an issue.
I have already tried a clean up (off the car), to no avail.
The car is not on use, so now I have some good info to start with, I can take it apart and have a look what’s what.

Presumably the bulb is supposed to be a sealed unit? Any good idea what oil is supposed to be inside it?

That’s fair enough on a car being restored to show quality etc.
The one I have here is one of many needy vehicles, so I can’t go all out crazy on it. I am just getting the basics attended to currently.

hey , thats your choice

but understanding how the V12 starts up is vital to knowing this part needs to be in good working order for correct cold start and correct hot running ,

firstly, the bulb is filled with wax, this wax filled bulb is factory crimped to allow the heated wax to expand in a known rate as to act on the piston adjusting the airflow to both banks of the V12,

the right hand bank does not draw in air on cold start, only the left bank airbox draws in air at cold start past the AAV to the balance pipe with delivers air to the back side of both TB's ( union is on the intake manifold end )until that airflow is cutoff by this wax bulb action when hot, allowing the bypass to regulate idle settings, and the TB 2 thou setting of the butterflies to prevent stalling from suffocation ,

the quick cheat after cleaning away any gummed up action is to physically crimp the wax bulb a little to regain any pressure loss from age , but as i said, this is only temporary as the wax has already lost its properties from new

Yes, its a sealed unit, looking at various pics, majority of these bulbs are made by Bosch it seems and no idea on what oil it is, BB mentions wax, similar thing I suppose, when heated it expands

I bit the bullet and ordered the genuine Bosch part.
Plus a new hose on top of the valve (as it’s splitting).
Now to find time to fit them.

There's a chap on Facebook who offers a rebuild service for 5.3 (XJ-S) air valves, he might be able to do the same for a 6.0 item?
Apparently the 5.3 and 6.0 AAVs aren't too different from eachother...

Any idea what the actual difference is between the 5.3 abd 6.0 versions? Obviously the part numbers are different.
Is if possible to use the 5.3 version on a 6.0?

The AAV on my car has stopped working correctly causing the engine to run at low revs, and also throwing a check engine fault. My AAV has been taken apart previously and repaired, but i believe it has stopped working again. SNG had the part as special item on order for quiete some time now meaning a waiting list, without the option to return.
I called them up yesterday and found out that the item is on stock for 187,72 Pounds incl VAT. My AAV is on its way, stock is low so maybe an item worth putting on the shelf? It's not a steal, but as written in previous posts this is an item that will perish with time and causes all kinds of nuisances around the V12.

Here we go, the new aav is in and the car idles correctly for a change both cold and warm.
No long joy though as I took the car for a spin last weekend, and suddenly had a loss of power. It does not rev over 3500 rpm and has a strange whining sound. My local mechanic says the sound comes from the exhaust manifold and he thinks it's the gasket. The noise is one problem, the sudden loss of power another one.
The car smells of fuel and I will check ignition system, coil and spark plugs. I hope this will not be a major issue...
Any ideas on in where to look additionally are of course welcome.
