What fluid is it?

Postby Lightweight » Sat Jun 27, 2020 11:38 pm

I have a luminous yellow fluid leaking from somewhere that is collecting on the underside of the alternator. I don't think it is coolant as that was a bad orange/brown colour when I drained it.
I have cleaned up around the area to see if I can find the source but a lot of the hoses are soaked so it is not easy (for me).
Any idea what it cold be?

Thanks
Andy

Hydraulic System Mineral Oil/ HSMO/ often called LHM+.

Chances are it’s coming from the pump above the Alt.
It’s a dual purpose pump for the power steering and SLS.
It could be something as simple as an O-Ring or washer though. It’s worth checking before assuming the worst.

As always with leaks. Clean up the current spillage, so you can better see exactly where the fluid is leaking from.

Thanks Naki. I really need to work out what they did when removing the old suspension and going to springs. I assume it was a Jaguar conversion but I have no paperwork.
As per my post in the suspension chat the cap for the suspension fluid container has been drilled through. I have no idea if that was standard practice or something else.

I will have a look at my spares car here. I have not converted one myself, but I seem to recall there was still fluid on the HSMO tank. So our talking a closed loop set up on the pipework might be a safer bet.

Here’s my V12 breaker.
No hole in the cap.
The pipe to the rear suspension does appear to be capped.
I don’t recall if there was still fluid on the tank though

I just checked another.
Fluid is in the tank. With a decommissioned system.

Thank you for taking the time to go and check all this for me, and hopefully for others in a similar situation.
Time to start investigating my setup in more depth. Maybe now is the time to invest in the quickjack..

Well found the leak, the hose has given up under the clamp. I assume it's general high pressure hose as it's showing as NLA on all websites I have checked.

Yeah, any decent hydraulics shop should be able to make a replacement for you...

Indeed. A brand new custom hose I would think is the way to go. It’s good news I would suggest. Rebuilding the pump would be a bigger headache.
