This piece has slits in it that allow water to pass through and down the pipe. It does get clogged, good to keep an eye on it in winter. If you have no plastic piece ...get one!

I suspect the drain filter is long gone.

Clean out all the muck with a none sharp object. You will find the drain hole

Cleaned out the filter neck and it wasn’t as bad as expected and, the drain appeared completely unblocked and once I poured some water around it, it drained immediately.
I opened the bonnet and had a look around and noted that it was very wet around the top and by the tool kit but, nothing obvious to show where it it’s leaking so, could this just be condensation?
I then pulled up the bottom carpet which was absolutely sodden. However, I did find that the boot floor drain cap is loose. Could it just be as simple as refitting with a bit of seam sealant and job done?
Boot carpet is in the garage draining off so I’ve a couple of days for it all to dry out before I refit.

I’ve also had a good look at the plug, it’s knackered and rotted through. Is this something I will be able to get from the main dealer or, is there a specialist out there that I need to get to know? I’m guessing a second hand one will be pointless as it’s probably in a similar condition?

until you obtain a replacement, put a strip of black gaffer tape over it,

it will at least stop the ingress of water while driving

Good idea. I was wondering how to keep it dry until I obtained another!

Here we go again with water leaks/ wet boots. There’s lots of posts on this subject.

I don’t really think any XJ40 is 100% water right if it lives outside long term.

Water can enter the boot from multiple different locations. A cleared drain on the gator will help.
Check for any splits in the rubber too though.

Is this the right size?

I'm missing a bunch on my 300, just removed couple from the boot yesterday, looked like yours, completely rotted away.

I’ve found the part, it appears to be BAC 4307 but, the only place I can actually find them for sale online are in the US and Australia - odd?

Yes, I'd suggest its condensation .... One of "my" 40's had a lot of it in exactly the same place..... Causing (eventually) rear "deck" corrosion issues around the petrol filler flap. From painful experience "40 boots" can be wetter than an Amazon Rain Forest ................................. ;) :o
