interesting point here, all 40's except the last few cars had a boot release solenoid, located on the vertical part of the boot lid , bottom left corner if you look at the car from the rear with the boot closed, easy to see on early cars, but covered by the vertical boot liner on later cars, this solenoid connects to the lock mech via a brass rod about 6 inches long and is connected into the car loom by two wires terminating in a small brown plug

there is no reference I can find in any Jag literature, but close to the end of production this solenoid was deleted and a version of the 300 boot lock was used, altough it all looks the same from the outside

i'm pretty sure this change does not coincide with passenger airbag intro, as I have had two cars with the conventional boot solenoid, one was the Daimler which has just gone, vin 689434, and my old DD6 Insignia, 689908, however two L reg Golds 703575, and ??, I broke both had the updated release as does my 3.2 Maj 707375

should anyone need, i have plenty of solenoids here (cheap!!), and one of the later style boot locks with key and all fitments (not cheap!!)
if it ain't sideways, it ain't serious

So if a later 40 has no boot solenoid, but does have the wiring for the boot release switch in the armrest, I'm presuming there will also be an unused connector tucked away somewhere in the boot panel??

not that i am aware of, the last 40's have a real hand made look to the wiring in the boot lid, there is no loom "tail" as on earlier cars that leads to the bottom left corner of the boot lid to plug into the solenoid, my guess is that if the wiring is in the armrest it will operate whatever operating mech is attached to the lock, as the boot lock works in the normal manner off the key, remote and panic button

what we need is an example car with one fitted to see how it all works
if it ain't sideways, it ain't serious

X300 and XJ40 version.
I think it’s easier to fit the X300 version under the arm rest, than the early 40 version.
