94 Sovver - number plate lights

Postby fless1 » Thu Nov 28, 2019 4:41 pm

Got intermittent failing light over number plate.

Undid screws and nothing moved
Advice on opening light up to check bulb/contacts etc please

Sounds simple but don't want to break anything. Seems breaking things is much easier than fixing them

You're right about that concerning the number plate lamps on a "40" very fragile in my experience (especially with age). They can self destruct for fun and the festoon bulb dissapear into the boot lid "ribs" for added enjoyment too ................... Only to re-appear several months (when You've forgotten about it) later, when vibration and so on have allowed them to exit via a hole in said rib. My best advice is to try removing the carpet like trim inside the boot lid, to assist access. ;)

Edit, In fact, they can be SO fragile I'd be getting spares https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JAGUAR-XJ6-X ... Sws65ToCBY ;)

Change the bulbs while you're in there - might as well!

I thought a bulb either works or doesn’t. Can a bulb fail intermittently ?

Yes, if it has damage to the filament.
Usually won't last long that way, though...

Strangely, I had an intermittently failing bulb in one of my reversing lights which lasted quite a while. It took me ages to find it, since the possibility never occurred to me. I didn't think it was possible to have an intermittently failing bulb, until I had one fail like that myself.

Here's a good old story about a bulb ............. Double filament, offset pin, (side and brake light, can't remember the Lucas number) .... The side light filament failed and dropped onto the live "post" of the brake light filament. Turning the side lights on put a live feed back to the brake light switch and the engine management, no power no rev' ... Took a bit of finding especially when the lights were turned off, everything returned to normal :o
