Steering Rack

Postby Ballard » Sat Aug 03, 2019 8:42 am

I have a 1990 4.0. Sovereign. As is typical, the sls system has long since been removed.

Despite this I would still expect the power steering to be running on the green hmo, yet on my car the reservoir is full of red dex II and the accompanying sticker amended accordingly to ensure correct refilling.

Why would this be? I can only think the original steering rack has been replaced at some point and replaced with a later version.

Does this seem likely or could there be another explanation?

If so, is this because the late racks are improved or because the original racks are no longer available?

AFAIK Late (ZF) racks don't fit early (Adwest) cars (steering column angle fitment doesn't work) - so likely you don't have one of those installed.

I may be wrong but I believe the rack can run just as well on Dexron equiv (red stuff) as it does on the green mineral oil.

Thanks, didn't know that.

A bit of searching confirms the racks on the 90-92 cars can be run on hmo or dexron. So the change may well be indicative of nothing.

Can anyone confirm interchangeability of racks between model years? Have read conflicting advice. Anyone changed them over themselves?

They do fit. They are one of the very few parts that actually fit all model years :o would you believe it. When nearly every other part changes.
I have personally removed at least 2x ZF racks that were successfully fitted on battery under bonnet models/ 90-92.

If you look at 86-89 3.6/2.9 models, those used DII on the Power steering. But those had separate reservoirs for the brake boosting hydraulics and power steering. They used the same Adwest racks.
On 90-92MY- The only reason the PS reservoir “insists” that only HSMO can be used, is for uniformity across the specs, encompassing the models with SLS optioned/ factory fitted. HSMO is only necessary for operating SLS.

Maybe the RHD racks are interchangeable with early late models but I'm almost sure the left hookers don't, read about one guy the tried and gave up because of steering column arrangement/angle.

I suppose that is possible. I have never worked on a LHD.
Having said that. I have removed them easily, though not ever needed to fit one. It’s quite possible these things are generally harder to fit than they are to remove.

Ballard has not said where’s he’s located, but should he guess he’s LHD?

They can fit but as Larry says the steering angle is not as straight , it's not much difference and if everything is just right , position of the subframe and steering column it will work but too much of an angle and you'll feel a tight spot on turning fully , you can easily tell if you have a newer zf rack as they are cast aluminium whereas the adwest are painted ,
