My fuse boxes looked like new too when I removed them, but in fact they weren't.
If you've got them out, good idea to reflow the joints anyway.

A-Ha ! Success !

Re-fitted the fuse box this morning, and thought I'd give it a try and lo and behold it started.......

I have no clue why it now all works if I'm honest, it would seem that by removing and re-fitting the fuse box - along with a healthy dose of glaring at it and swearing at it as well seems to have done the trick.

Thank you to you all for your help and advice :D

If the fuse box is suffering from age, the car could spuriously play up again.

If it does, get the fuse box back out and re solder the connections. I’ve had this issue on my car, months of messing around chasing an issue turns out to be one cracked solder!

I hope the car now proves reliable for you anyway. I got mine in 2009 and this has been the only fail to proceed issue in all that time.

It's early days to find out if this issue has gone away I guess ( it probably hasn't ) So far, I went to the petrol station yesterday - and a trip into Spalding today and no issues yet ! I have put a length of wire with a couple of blade terminals affixed in the boot so that I can get home if need be.
This has been the only reliability I have ever had, before I retired it was my daily driver and covered 80 miles every day and we have also had holidays in Devon, North Wales, and County Durham as well as the normal running about and never had any problems at all.... we shall see :D
