89 Sovereign Fog lamps

Postby Per » Wed May 31, 2017 10:01 pm

Anybody know if XJ-S fog lamps are the same as the XJ40? Those on my daughter's car are rather rusty but I have a good set for an '89 XJ-S stashed away somewhere. The XJ-S is long gone but the lamps turned up some years ago. They will take some time digging out though so nice if it could be confirmed they will fit. (From memeory they were the same and certainly looked the same from up front.)

Not 100 per cent certain but I'd say they're the same. A tad pricy the last time I looked ! http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/272679752576? ... EBIDX%3AIT

If there is any difference, it may well be the plug connectors. They were forever changing them, so it will likely depend which model year XJS they are off.

I know for the XJS the front fog lamps are very rare. £500 is to be expected...its not just the lamps but the covers too and the mounting brackets and then the switch pack.... all nigh on impossible to source

If the XJ40 and XJS were interchangeable I would suspect that a lot of XJSs would be wearing XJ40 fog lamps!

The lamps have not failed at MOT time here yet so I haven't got around to check the fit yet. I do know I still have them somewhere though.

Don’t you just remove them if they are testing them as part of the MOT? It’s not the law to have them fitted surely?

I was once advised that if fog lamps were fitted they had to be working ? I don't think so however. On the "early" Sovereigns, like the XJ-S they are fitted as we know, as a kind of afterthought below the bumper. A customer of mine once had a Nissan Micra who's centre lap seat belt catch had broken the evening prior to an M.O.T. test. A child seat got the blame that day. Not being able to source a replacement before the 10am test, I simply removed the damaged belt and catch (receiver) in order to get a "pass" which it did ... (It can't be tested if its not there) and then found a good second hand unit later in the day, at the re-cycling yard .....
