Hi Robert ... I don't have specific "40" experience on this, but, to try and answer your questions one by one. Firstly our Cars are still within the realms of "Reality" and no, to the best of my knowledge the "Computer" (engine management system) doesn't have much to do...

Hello again Robert ... Briefly the "Ballast" circuit (normally switched by the starter solenoid) is a "Dual" Ignition circuit .... One, that is live when the engine is running ... and another that is live when the engine is being "Cranked" (by the starter), its purpose ...

Robert, welcome, to the forum.
Its just possible that with a replacement starter fitted, you might find the fault you describe mysteriously disappears. Its also worth checking the "Ballast" circuit wiring and its connection on the starter solenoid ...
