Welcome to XJ40.com - help us to help you!

Thank you for joining XJ40.com. Before you start there are a few things to consider to make sure you hit the ground running and ensure you make the most of the wealth of knowledge we have to offer!

Add your location to your profile

It is important to state your location. All we need is country/county and town name. As this is an open forum, we recommend you don't add your full address for obvious reasons. However, knowing your location is useful for other members when giving advice on repairs, where to have repairs done, finding parts, recommended breakers, suppliers or even other members who are willing to help. Knowing your location will make all the difference.

To add your location, please follow these steps:
1. Click on your username in the top right-hand corner of the page
2. In the menu that appears, click "User Control Panel"
3. Click the "Profile" tab
4. Enter your location into the appropriate field. Feel free to complete the other information too if you like (but remember that this is an open forum!)

Add your car details to your signature

As you may already know, there is a huge difference between early and late XJ40's, and there are lots more subtle difference between the various production years too. Therefore, adding some basic information about your car(s) will be a big help when asking for advice. At a minimum we recommend that you add the following information: Model year, Specification (i.e. Sovereign, Gold, XJ6), Engine size, Transmission, and Last 6 digits of your VIN (Vehicle Identification Number, item 3 on this page shows a description of how to find your VIN).

For example:
93 Sovereign 4.0 Auto 673313 - or
89 XJ6 3.6 Manual 585959

Feel free to add any other cars from your fleet into your signature too. This often provides a good topic for general chat!

To add or edit your signature, please follow these steps:
1. Click on your username in the top right-hand corner of the page
2. In the menu that appears, click "User Control Panel"
3. Click the "Profile" tab
4. In the left-hand menu, click "Edit Signature"
5. Enter your signature info and click "Submit"

Please note: you may add images to your signature too, but please resize the image before uploading it. Between 150 and 200 pixels high is about right.

Finding your VIN, paint code and trim code

These details can be found on a sticker. Open the left-hand front door and look down at the bottom of the B-pillar.
You will see a sticker like the one below with lots of information, including your VIN, the paint code and trim code:

Your VIN number is extremely important when diagnosing faults or sourcing the correct parts, unless you are knowledgeable about part numbers and compatibility already. See the "Understanding model years" section below for more info.

If you're interested in decoding your VIN number, or learning more about paint/trim codes, visit the link below:

Understanding model years

If you are new to XJ40 ownership, you might not be aware of the huge number of changes to parts, specification and engines, that happened throughout the XJ40 production years. Many parts from one model year are completely different and incompatible with other model years. Therefore there is no point in members recommending a certain part, only to find out that your car is from a different model year.

There are three distinct model years:
- 86-89 Often referred to as "Digital Dash" cars, with either 3.6 or 2.9 engines, battery under the bonnet.
- 90-92 3.2/4.0 analogue dash, with battery under the bonnet.
- 93-94 Often referred to as "Battery in boot" cars with either 3.2/4.0 or 6.0 V12 engines.

There are exceptions to the rules too. There were a small number of 2.9 cars produced into 1990, with an analogue dash (not digital). 93MY cars actually started being produced at the end of September 1992. So two cars sold in September 1992 could both be completely different! Also 94MY cars have a small number of changes, like different door hinges, a passenger side airbag, different side repeaters, revised oil filler cap on cam cover, etc.

LWB XJ40's are called "Majestic", and have extra length in the rear passenger compartment, with revised roof lines and rear window. These were only produced as "battery in boot" cars during production years 1993 and 1994.

Posting pictures and videos

Topics with pictures or videos get far more views, responses and positive reactions. Remember, one photo speaks a thousand words! Why spend one page trying to describe a fault when very often one picture or a quick video recording will tell us what we need to know? Quite often this can be vital when diagnosing faults, helping members to recognize issues and provide the best possible advice.

We have put together two brief guides, one shows you how to add pictures and the other shows how to add YouTube videos.

To add pictures, follow this guide:

Forum etiquette

We like to think we are a friendly and welcoming bunch on this forum. We do try to keep it polite and friendly, but still with healthy dose of comedy banter. Its a fine balance! Many members come on here for socializing too, so its not simply a question and answer technical forum.

We ask that you comply with our forum etiquette guidelines at all times, these can be found here:

Thanks in advance!
